About Street Rod Nationals

The first South African Street Rod Nationals was held in Bloemfontein in 1985, organized by Stuart Cox. Since then, it has become the premier gathering for street rod enthusiasts across South Africa. The event rotates between cities every two years, bringing together hundreds of passionate builders, collectors, and admirers of classic American iron and custom builds.

What started as a modest gathering has grown into a major event attracting over 500 exhibitors and 6000 spectators. The Nationals showcase the incredible talent and dedication of South African street rodders who transform classic vehicles into stunning works of rolling art. From traditional hot rods to radical customs, the diversity represents decades of automotive culture adapted to the South African context.

Our Heritage

The various street rod clubs across South Africa decided early on that the Nationals should be held every two years, allowing sufficient time for preparation and ensuring each event maintains its special character. Cities from Cape Town to Gauteng have hosted this celebration of automotive passion, each bringing its unique flavor to the event.

The event has been hosted in Bloemfontein, Alberton, Kimberley, Port Elizabeth, Durban, East London, Klerksdorp, and Cape Town. Each location has contributed to the rich tapestry of South African hot rod culture. The rotating format ensures that enthusiasts from all provinces get the opportunity to participate without excessive travel, while also spreading the love of street rods throughout the country.

Vehicle Storage Solutions in Cape Town

Building and maintaining a street rod in Cape Town presents unique challenges that every serious enthusiast understands. The Western Cape's coastal climate combines salt-laden air from the Atlantic with intense summer sun and winter storms, creating an environment that can quickly damage unprotected vehicles. Whether you're working on a long-term build project or preserving a finished show car, proper covered storage is not optional - it's essential for protecting your investment.

Cape Town street rod builders face specific environmental threats. The south-easter wind carries salt spray that corrodes chrome, attacks paint, and degrades metal surfaces even kilometers inland. Summer temperatures can exceed 35 degrees Celsius, causing interior materials to crack and fade while baking paint finishes. Winter brings cold fronts with heavy rain that can penetrate inadequate shelters and cause rust in critical areas. These conditions demand year-round protection that goes beyond a simple tarp or basic covering.

Many Cape Town enthusiasts lack dedicated garage space suitable for automotive projects. Property prices in the Western Cape make large garages expensive, and older properties often have small or no covered parking. Apartment living is increasingly common, leaving collectors without any protected storage at home. These space constraints don't diminish the need for proper vehicle protection - they make finding practical solutions even more critical.

For builders attending shows across the Western Cape and beyond, having reliable covered storage at home becomes increasingly important. The drive to Nationals events, local club gatherings, and weekend cruises exposes vehicles to road debris, weather changes, and environmental hazards. Returning home to secure, weather-tight storage ensures your pride and joy stays in show condition between outings, preventing the gradual deterioration that plagues vehicles left exposed.

The financial investment in a quality street rod build justifies serious consideration of protection options. Professional paint work in Cape Town can cost R50,000 to R150,000 or more. Chrome plating requires specialist services with premium pricing. Interior restoration demands patience and significant expense. Engine rebuilds represent tens of thousands of rands in parts and machine work. Every component deserves protection from the Cape Town elements that would undo your hard work and drain your budget through preventable damage.

Cape Town builders increasingly recognize that professional carports Cape Town providers offer practical solutions for vehicle protection without the expense of permanent construction. These engineered structures feature heavy-duty galvanized steel framing designed to withstand Cape Town's notorious south-easter winds, UV-resistant covers that handle intense summer sun, and proper drainage systems for winter rains. Quality installations provide weather-tight protection while maintaining accessibility for regular use and ongoing project work.

Modern carport structures can be customized to fit specific Cape Town property configurations and municipal requirements. Sizes accommodate everything from a single project vehicle to multi-car collections. Heights can be adjusted for taller hot rods or vehicles on trailers. Installation typically completes in days rather than the months required for traditional building construction. The structures can be relocated if you move properties, offering flexibility that permanent garages cannot match.

Proper vehicle storage maintains both value and appearance for decades. Chrome stays brilliant without pitting or corrosion. Paint retains its depth and gloss without fading or oxidation. Interior materials don't crack, fade, or deteriorate from UV exposure. Mechanical components stay clean and dry, reducing corrosion and extending service life. For Cape Town street rod enthusiasts who've invested years perfecting every detail, professional covered storage isn't an expense - it's essential insurance protecting everything you've built.

As you prepare for the next show season and plan your participation in upcoming events, evaluate your current storage situation honestly. Does your vehicle receive adequate protection from Cape Town's challenging climate? Are you risking damage to paint, chrome, and interior materials through inadequate shelter? Quality covered storage designed specifically for Cape Town conditions provides the security and weather protection that serious builders require, ensuring your street rod maintains its quality and value for years of enjoyment ahead.

Competition Categories

The Street Rod Nationals features comprehensive judging across multiple categories celebrating different aspects of automotive culture:

Street Rods

Traditional hot rods typically built on pre-1949 chassis with modified engines, transmissions, or suspensions. This category honors the roots of hot rodding with period-appropriate modifications executed to modern standards. Judges evaluate authenticity, quality of workmanship, and overall presentation. Recent winners include Willie Botha's 1929 Model A Pickup and Walter Gale's 1933 Ford Coupe.

T-Buckets

Lightweight roadsters built on Model T frames, often featuring radical modifications and powerful engines. These stripped-down machines represent pure hot rod spirit with minimal bodywork and maximum attitude. The open-wheel configuration and exposed mechanicals make these builds particularly challenging to execute well.

Custom and Classic

Vehicles from the 1950s and early 1960s with custom modifications ranging from subtle updates to radical transformations. This category celebrates the golden age of American automotive design with South African interpretation. Johan Griesel's 1956 Buick and George Von Backstrom's 1956 Chev Nomad exemplify the quality in this competitive class.

Late Greats

Later classic vehicles from the 1960s and beyond that might not fit traditional hot rod definitions but deserve recognition for quality and creativity. This category welcomes European classics, unique imports, and unusual builds that demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship regardless of origin.

Muscle Cars

High-performance vehicles from the muscle car era, both original and modified. This category has grown significantly as these vehicles have matured into collectible classics. From Camaros to Corvettes, Cobras to Chargers, the variety showcases the global muscle car phenomenon with South African flavor.

Open Class

A catch-all category for vehicles that don't fit standard classifications but deserve recognition. This class welcomes innovative builds, unusual combinations, and creative interpretations that push the boundaries of what defines a street rod.

Planning Your Participation

The Street Rod Nationals requires advance planning whether you're exhibiting, spectating, or vending. Registration typically opens several months before the event through the organizing club. Early registration is recommended as spaces fill quickly and pricing increases closer to the event date.

For Exhibitors

Vehicles can be entered in judged or display-only categories. Judged entries compete for trophies and recognition across various classes. Display entries avoid the judging process but still receive equal placement and attention. Both options celebrate your build and contribute to the show's diversity. Review category requirements carefully when registering to ensure proper classification.

Activities Beyond the Show

The Nationals weekend traditionally includes more than just the main show day. Organized runs to scenic locations, informal gatherings, technical seminars, and social events fill the extended weekend. The Kareekloof lunch run has become a favorite tradition, offering spectacular scenery and driving enjoyment. Evening activities include dinner dances and prize-giving ceremonies where the community comes together to celebrate achievements.

Accommodations

The host city typically offers various accommodation options from hotels to guesthouses to camping facilities. Book early as the event attracts visitors from across South Africa and neighboring countries. Many participants prefer staying near the venue to minimize trailer towing and maximize participation in activities.

What to Bring

Comfortable clothing for variable weather conditions is essential. South African weather can shift dramatically, especially during autumn. Bring camera equipment to document the incredible vehicles. Sunscreen and hats protect against our intense sun. Most importantly, bring your passion for automotive culture and willingness to engage with fellow enthusiasts.

The South African Street Rod Scene

Street rodding in South Africa reflects our unique automotive culture. While inspired by American hot rod tradition, local builders have adapted techniques and styles to our conditions, parts availability, and creative sensibilities. The result is a distinctive approach that honors tradition while forging its own identity.

Parts sourcing presents challenges and opportunities. While some components must be imported from the United States or Europe, South African fabricators and suppliers have developed local solutions for many needs. This self-reliance has fostered innovation and problem-solving skills that define our builds. The ability to create solutions from limited resources is a point of pride in the community.

Various clubs across South Africa maintain the culture between Nationals. The Reef Street Rod Club, Cape Town Street Rodders, and others organize regular events keeping the spirit alive year-round. Monthly breakfast runs, garage tours, and informal gatherings provide opportunities for knowledge sharing and friendship. These clubs form the backbone of our street rod community, passing skills and passion to new generations.

The diversity of South African street rods reflects our multicultural society. Builders from all backgrounds contribute their perspectives, creating a rich tapestry of styles and approaches. This diversity strengthens the hobby, bringing fresh ideas and techniques that benefit everyone. The Nationals exemplifies this inclusive spirit, welcoming anyone with passion for automotive creativity.
